What Happens When Slot Machine Tickets Expire
US players, read this first. Online casino and sportsbook law is decided state by state, and the operators listed here are licensed offshore rather than by a US state regulator. Check what is legal where you live before you deposit. You must be 21 or older. Responsible gambling · 1-800-GAMBLER

Nevada players left $22 million in cashout vouchers unredeemed in 2021, according to reporting published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in August 2022. Once a printed ticket leaves the machine, it enters an administrative countdown governed by state gaming regulations rather than casino whim.
State Deadlines Range From 30 Days to One Year
The lifespan of a slot voucher depends entirely on the gaming jurisdiction where the machine printed it. Under Washington State Gambling Commission kiosk standards, redemption kiosks must display a statement warning that tickets expire in 30 days.
Other regulators give players a wider window. The Colorado Division of Gaming mandates that tickets expire 120 days after issuance. In New Mexico, Rule 15.1.7 NMAC sets a 180-day expiration window and requires that the exact expiration date appear on the face of every printed ticket.
South Australia takes a longer approach: gaming venues must honor vouchers for 12 months from the date of issue.
System Lockouts and the Cost of Honoring Old Paper
Once a voucher crosses its legal expiration date, the central system changes how it handles the barcode.
In New Mexico, state administrative code requires the gaming system to treat an expired voucher as completely invalid. The software cannot accept it at bill validators or redemption machines, cutting off play immediately.
The Colorado Division of Gaming takes a different regulatory angle. Unredeemed tickets remain the licensee’s reporting and liability responsibility right up to the 120-day mark. If a Colorado casino decides to pay an expired voucher as a customer courtesy, the state treats the payout as a promotional expense. That classification has teeth: the licensee cannot deduct the payout from its gross gaming revenue for state tax calculations.
Where Unclaimed Slot Cash Actually Lands
Unclaimed balances do not simply sit in an operator's daily cash pool. Regulators enforce revenue splits that divert millions to public balance sheets.
In Nevada, the state takes 75 percent of the total expired voucher value, with the Nevada Gaming Commission depositing that sum into the state general fund. The casino licensee keeps the remaining 25 percent.
South Australia diverts uncollected cash away from general spending. In South Australia, venues holding expired tickets worth $1 or more must remit that money to the commissioner once their monthly tally reaches $750. From there, the state routes the money into the Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund.
Cage Redemptions and Emergency Exceptions
For players attempting an expired casino ticket TITO redeem transaction, the automated kiosk is useless. Once the internal clock elapses, kiosks reject the barcode, making the cashier's cage the only possible venue for resolution.
Systemwide grace periods require direct regulatory intervention. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement enacted emergency relief for tickets expiring on or after March 16, 2020. That order extended voucher lifespans through 30 days after gaming floors reopened, allowing patrons to redeem stale slips at the cashier cage of the specific casino or racetrack where the machine was played.
Whether a cage clerk can honor a late voucher comes down to local law. In jurisdictions where systems mandate a hard lockout or penalize the casino on tax deductions, expired slips become immediate revenue for state accounts.
