The ancient civilization, astonishing artifacts, fascinating ruins, and the self-contained Machu Picchu are four of the many reasons why tourists, explorers, adventurers, and regular people visit Peru. Gambling in Peru is just as interesting and intriguing as these reasons. Therefore, Peru is one of the most sought-after destinations in South America, along with Chile and Colombia.

History of Casinos in Peru

President Alberto Fujimori, the 62nd president of Peru, might not be loved by a lot of people, but gamblers and businessmen in the gambling industry have him to thank for the gambling laws of Peru. He, in 1994, updated the gambling laws by passing an act that allows people to gamble on a variety of gaming machines (such as slots).

However, the act had to fight instability and soon fumbled. When he fell in 2000, a new democratic government was elected to govern Peru. The government issued a study in 2004, only to find out that there are more than 63,000 slot machines and 900 slot parlors operating in the country at the time. Out of these gigantic figures, only 5 percent of the slot machines and 57 of 900 slot parlors were found to be legally registered for carrying out such operations. Peru Flag

The government became insecure regarding the fact that the ongoing unregulated gambling activities would do nothing but spread rapidly. President Alejandro Toledo then issued a decree that gave slot parlours a reasonable timeframe to regulate and license their operations. Unfortunately, the decree led to no tangible result because slot parlour owners perfectly ignored it. The further solution was a series of police raids recommended by the government. More than 500 unlicensed slot machines were burnt during the raids, prompting owners to either license or have their machines destroyed.

The answer was simple. However, unlicensed slot parlour owners had the right to seek judicial stays to extend their operations invalidly. The year 2006 witnessed that shortcut cut short by the then-present government.

Reordering and Formalization of Casino and Slot Machines Law was the strict law passed by President Alejandro Toledo’s administration, which ordered casinos and slot parlours to register with the Department of Foreign Trade and Tourism before 1 January 2007. It worked like magic! The department received more than 600 applications in just six months.

Since that day, Peru has become an authority in the South American gambling industry and even the whole world. In fact, Peru has gone beyond casinos and slot machines. Currently, there are horse race tracks, poker, bingo, sports betting and many more.

Current Gambling Climate

As long as the casino is fully regulated and licensed by the Department of Foreign Trade and Tourism, operations are completely legal. Although the tax system is quite overwhelming, the number of locally-owned casinos and gambling facilities in Peru keeps growing day in, day out.

Peru has a total of 80 gambling facilities spread throughout the country. Most of these gambling facilities are massive hits within South America while some are even popular across the world. Names such as Palacio Royal (in eight different cities), Majestic Casino (at J.W. Marriott Hotel), Atlantic City Casino, and Fiesta Casino are popular in other parts of the world.

Further, a typical Peruvian casino has its space inside a hotel. And for the ease of funds, Peruvian casinos have ATMs nearby and accept credit cards at the cash desks. Also, staffs are usually fluent in both English and Spanish.
Finally, the country ensures security through regular police patrols during the day and in the night. Citizens, as well as tourists, do enjoy the gambling atmosphere and culture perfectly posed by these facilities, police and the government.

Casinos in Peru by Area

All casinos in Peru are evenly spread throughout the regions. The 80 gambling facilities are situated in 13 cities, with Lima having the most — a whopping figure of 23. Lima features 90+ table games and 4,200+ gaming machines. Located in Lima is Casino Golden Palace, the largest casino in Peru, which offers 900+ gaming machines.

Types of Casinos

Casinos in Peru offer a wide range of games and machines. For one, Peruvians have grown accustomed to slot machines. Yet, the casinos offer much more than slot machines. They offer roulette, blackjack, bingo, craps, Texas hold’em poker, baccarat, Caribbean poker tables, and many more. There are two offline lottery facilities provided by Scientific Games and Intralot, individually.

Most casinos offer regular tournaments and nightly cash games — a bonus for nighttime lovers. A piece of recommendation to tourists: arrive from 9 PM to 10 PM.

Furthermore, sports betting and horse racing tracks are also getting more popular in Peru. Hippodrome de Monterico is one of the most popular race tracks in Peru, where horseracing bets are placed legally. The tracks are open on Monday and from Thursday to Saturday, only in the afternoon.

As mentioned earlier, Peruvian gambling is embodied inside slot machines. So, slot machines and parlours witness the highest level of patronage in Peru. As a result, some of the casinos offer nothing more than slot machines.
Online gambling in Peru, on the other hand, is a bit confusing. In fact, the government has no regulatory body to regulate online gambling providers and activities. The first online gambling license ever issued in Peru was given to Betsson in February 2008. Concurrently, the Peruvian Gaming Control Board was working on regulating online casinos in 2015. Unfortunately, the board didn’t say yes, neither did they say no.
