Invented in 1984 by Soviet-born Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris was a wildly popular video game during the late 20th century and is still played by millions of people around the world today. As one of the most iconic games of all time with more than 170 million total copies sold, you would expect to see at least one Tetris slot machine pop up over the years. However, it took more than 30 years for a Tetris-themed slot machine to finally be introduced.
In 2016, the parent company of WMS Gaming (Scientific Games) entered into a partnership with Blue Planet Software to create a Tetris-themed slot machine for the first time ever. The game is officially called Tetris Super Jackpots, and it is now available in casinos across the United States.
Tetris Super Jackpots is a 5-reel video slot machine that is built on the WMS Twinstar™ J43 Curved Portrait Game Platform. It uses similar winning combinations to the original game, and is available as a “penny slot” with 50 paylines where players can bet anywhere from 50-250 credits ($0.50-$2.50) per spin. It is a pretty rare occurrence, but the game can sometimes be found on $0.10 denomination machines which are often located in a casino’s high limit room.
Tetris Super Jackpots Gameplay
Despite the original game being quite simple using basic graphics, Tetris Super Jackpots video slot machines use innovative WMS electronic gaming features. For that reason, gamers can expect an engaging slots experience with vibrant HD graphics, enhanced reels, thrilling bonus rounds and jackpots – all offering opportunities to win big.
Surprisingly, the slot machine incorporates images from the original Tetris game, which are 4-block figures called Tetrominoes. The Tetromino blocks arrange on one of the machine's 5 reels in 4 diverse color patterns. It also displays symbols for poker hand classes 10-A, a colorful Tetris logo (for free bonus rounds) and a diamond-shaped azure Tetromino. Players enjoy frequent rewards.
Each successful combination for the available Tetrimino symbols, regardless of shade, pays an equal amount (i.e. no single color will grant more than another). Winning sequences for 10-A icons give the smallest payouts available in the game, whereas Tetramino combinations reward significantly more. You must land two or more identical icons on a payline to succeed.
Tetrimino Feature and Expanding Reels
One of the main features of WMS Twinstar™ J43 Curved Portrait Game Platforms are its expanding reels. In Tetris Super Jackpots, this is called the “Tetrimino Feature”. While playing, the Tetrimino Feature can appear randomly during a spin at any time. Up to 2 Tetrimino symbols will appear either on or above one of the reels and the only symbols that will be displayed on an expanding reel are Tetrominoes. This offers players a chance to increase their win.
Tetris Super Jackpots Bonus Rounds
The Tetris Super Jackpots video slot machine has a single free games bonus feature available. In order to trigger the bonus, players need to land 3 multi-colored “Tetris” symbols anywhere on the reels which will earn them 10 free games. Once a player enters the free game feature, a new “Wild” symbol is introduced to the reels and could appear on any line, at any time. The expanding reels feature also appears more frequently during bonus rounds.
Tetris Slot Machine Jackpots
As its name implies, there are a few different jackpots available on this slot machine. The jackpot can only be triggered during free games by winning combinations of gold Tetromino symbols. Jackpots include a mini, minor and major, all of which pay a fixed amount. Jackpots pay a multiple of the player’s bet: 50x (mini), 250x (minor) and 2,500x (major).
